Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) work everyday rehabilitating
loss of language (Aphasia) caused by strokes, traumatic brain injury,
brain tumors etc… Aphasia may affect a person’s spoken words, ability
to comprehend language and to organize their thinking to include
reading and writing skills as well. SLP’s will work with other rehabilitation
specialists, medical staff and families to determine the appropriate
treatment plan for a person with Aphasia.
Swallowing
Dysphagia, or difficulty with swallowing impacts as many as 15 million
Americans, with approximately 1 million people annually receiving
a new diagnosis of the condition. If not properly managed, Dysphagia
can lead to: Aspiration pneumonia, choking, chronic malnutrition,
life- threatening dehydration, an increased rate of infection or
even death.
How Can SLP’s Help with Swallowing Problems?
SLP’s utilize a variety of tests to allow them to look at parts
of the swallowing mechanism. A Modified Barium Swallow (MBS) may
be recommended to determine the best course of treatment. Traditional
methods include: oral exercises, patient education, compensating
strategies and diet modification to improve safety of the swallow.
Specialty speach therapy treatment:
A new treatment has evolved with the potential to positively
impact Dysphagia and SPEED UP recovery. The use of neuromuscular
electrical stimulation (NMES) has been proven to improve Dysphagia
Therapy outcomes.
